Sample questions from Part 11

Here are a few questions from this part. Take the full test to answer all 20 and get your score.

Sample question 1

Statement: If the supplier delivers the goods, then the payment is released.
Fact: The supplier delivers the goods.

Which conclusion must be true?

  • The payment is not released.
  • Nothing can be concluded about whether the payment is released.
  • The payment is released.
  • The payment is not released, although the supplier delivers the goods.
Answer: The payment is released.
This is a valid modus ponens: the condition “the supplier delivers the goods” is met, so the result must follow. Hence The payment is released.

Sample question 2

Statements:
1. It cannot be that both the detour is closed and the delivery is delayed.
2. The bridge is repaired only if the detour is closed.
3. Trucks may cross the bridge if and only if the delivery is delayed.
4. If the bridge is repaired, then the detour is not closed.
5. Unless the detour is closed, trucks may not cross the bridge.
6. Fact: The bridge is not repaired.

Which conclusion must be true?

  • The detour is closed.
  • Trucks may not cross the bridge.
  • The detour is not closed.
  • If the delivery is not delayed, then the detour is closed.
Answer: Trucks may not cross the bridge.
Test every possible combination of true/false for the four situations against all the statements. Only 2 combinations survive: (the bridge is not repaired; trucks may not cross the bridge; the delivery is not delayed; the detour is not closed) or (the bridge is not repaired; trucks may not cross the bridge; the delivery is not delayed; the detour is closed). In every surviving case the following holds: Trucks may not cross the bridge. The other options can fail in a case that is still consistent with the statements (they are possible, but not certain).

Sample question 3

Statements:
1. All clerks are barangay officials.
2. Some scholars are clerks.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • Some barangay officials are not scholars.
  • All barangay officials are scholars.
  • Some scholars are barangay officials.
  • Some scholars are not barangay officials.
Answer: Some scholars are barangay officials.
Picture each group as a circle and combine the statements. The conclusion Some scholars are barangay officials is true in every possible arrangement of the circles that satisfies the given statements, while each of the other choices can be false in at least one arrangement.

Sample question 4

Statements:
1. All artists are students.
2. All barangay officials are artists.

Which conclusion must follow?

  • All students are barangay officials.
  • Some students are not barangay officials.
  • No barangay officials are students.
  • All barangay officials are students.
Answer: All barangay officials are students.
Picture each group as a circle and combine the statements. The conclusion All barangay officials are students is true in every possible arrangement of the circles that satisfies the given statements, while each of the other choices can be false in at least one arrangement.

Sample question 5

Statement: If the applicant passes the exam, then the applicant is hired.
Fact: The applicant is not hired.

Which conclusion must be true?

  • The applicant passes the exam, but the applicant is not hired.
  • Nothing can be concluded about whether the applicant passes the exam.
  • The applicant does not pass the exam.
  • The applicant passes the exam.
Answer: The applicant does not pass the exam.
This is a valid modus tollens: if the result did not happen, the condition cannot have been met. Hence The applicant does not pass the exam.
